FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

What is Reformer / Pilates and how is your training different to other Pilates Instructors?

I have completed my Pilates certification and training with APPI.

The traditional Classical Pilates exercises performed and taught by Joseph would not have been suitable for the general population. Therefore APPI have adapted and modified the original 34 exercises to accommodate all abilities and lifestyles. The style lends itself well to exercise rehabilitation and enhances performance, strength & conditioning for a variety of sports.

I have completed course in Matwork, Reformer, Equipment and specialist courses for Osteoporosis and Ante/Post Natal.

In addition I apply the theory and science to movement patterns. This helps promote stability and control within the body.

What should I wear and what is required for sessions?

For Pilates active wear and grip socks must be worn.

For Sports Massage you will be asked to strip down to your underwear but we use towels to cover you and always keep your modesty in mind. It is important that you feel comfortable at all times. If you feel more comfortable, you can bring a pair of shorts.

What happens during any Initial Appointment?

A full medical history will be taken and you will be asked what you want to achieve from the treatment. Your posture will be analysed including looking at musculoskeletal imbalances and specific problem areas. Your massage treatment will then be set according to your body’s needs. The majority of the treatment is hands-on work, it will include different techniques as well as possible mobilisations and stretches. You will be sent away with an aftercare plan.

Injury management is not only about providing sound treatment, it is about making sure that the client understands which actions to avoid and which can help to reduce inflammation and risk of further injury, and promote recovery. To provide the best care for the client, this often means using other techniques such as stretching, correctional exercises and strength work in addition to sports massage.

When is Sports Massage not recommended?

Massage is not recommended in cases where you may suffer from the following conditions:

Infectious skin disease, rash, or open wounds

Immediately after surgery

Immediately after chemotherapy or radiation, unless recommended by your doctor

People with osteoporosis should consult their doctor before getting a massage

Prone to blood clots. There is a risk of blood clots being dislodged. If you have heart disease, check with your doctor before having a massage

Massage should not be done directly over bruises, inflamed skin, unhealed wounds, tumours, abdominal hernia, or areas of recent fractures.

What are your qualifications to assess, treat or train me?

As well as being a fully certified equipment Pilates Instructor I am also skilled in a variety of other areas to do with Health, Fitness and Wellness.

I have a Bachelors of Science in Sports Therapy and am a member of the Society of Sports Therapists. This means I am equipped to understand, treat and rehabilitate musculoskeletal injuries. Within my continued professional development I have up-skilled to be able to exercise those with conditions such as Parkinson's, Osteoporosis, Women's Health.

I have a background in teaching Gymnastics to elite and recreational althete's for over 20 years. I am qualified in Womens Artistic Gymnastics Level 3.

I have extensive experience in the gym environment having started my career as a fitness instructor early in my career; to now a Level 3 Personal Trainer and MNU Certified Nutritionist.
